As a professional blogger, I read through tens of thousands of blogs each month, and after reading one of many syndication feeds this past weekend I have been contemplating what makes me stand out within my social media outlets.  I’ve come to realize that success in social media is as simple as being good at socializing.  With that said, though, you do not have to tell everyone what you had for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and you certainly don’t have to keep people updated every 5 seconds out of the day.  However, there is a general method to the madness in how to stand out and be successful amongst your social media platforms.

One of the most basic key rules with social media is to establish a captivating key message to deliver to your audience.  In other words, the topics that you decide to publish to your social media venues need to interesting; they need to captivate your audience and the topic along should keep them thinking well past the point they are done reading your update (even if it is only 140 characters).

After you have established an interesting key message to deliver to your social media audience, you need to be interested in what your community thinks.  The bottom line with blog posts, with LinkedIn, with Twitter, with Facebook, and any other social media platform is to listen and be sincerely interested in what your audience says and does when you publish your work.  Their reactions are true measurements of the interest levels with regard to your topics.  If you are not openly and actively looking for responses (you can do this by using Google Analytics or just by watching comments on your publications), then you will not know if your topic is truly received well by your audience.  Confused?  Think about it this way, if you were with your friends, are they getting bored when you tell a joke and you get no response from the punch line you need to find a different way to approach the joke, right?

Along with the above two points, it is very important that you are personal with your social media audience.  When I read a blog or a Twitter update, I don’t want to just read about your product.  On the contrary, I want to learn a little more about you personally.  It is not until then that I am able to develop a trusting relationship and start referring (or sharing) your updates.  Think about how you interact on Facebook, the contacts with whom you are most familiar are the ones that you “Like” their updates while your casual friends are the ones that you just let alone.  Be a little more personal with your social media audiences and you’ll establish more of those close “friends” that will share your posts.

Last, but certainly not least in your conquest to be successful in social media is a combination of being interactive, asking questions, and taking initiative.  As a social media expert you need to take matters into your own hands and not be bashful.  Ask people to share your updates, your posts, your information.  Ask people to give you feedback on your updates and posts.  Ask them to get involved; after all, the worst thing they can do is say no, right?  Lastly, make sure that your social media updates are interactive.  Features of your updates need to grab your audience and make them interact with you or your posts.  Let’s take a different look at this, and think about how you are with your friends again.  If you are having a one-sided conversation, people will not be engaged.  Instead, you hold a conversation with them and bring them deeper into your topics by asking questions and interacting with them.

Overall, social media is not a 50,000 piece jigsaw puzzle.  However, it is a great test to see how you interact with everyday people.  Use a page from your own relationship book and talk about interesting topics, be interested in what your audience has to say, get personal with your social media, and just be interactive!  It is that simple, and if you can accomplish these steps you will be well on your way to being successful within your social media platforms.  I invite you to leave comments below and open the discussion on other tips or feedback from this post.  And, as always, if you need help establishing a social media marketing plan please feel free to contact IMPACT.

With the impending release of ‘Google Me’, Facebook continues to impress and astound the online community with their staggering statistics.  The social media giants have transition from a marketing option to a marketing necessity in social media marketing plans. To further their reign over social media, Facebook announced that they have reached the milestone of 500 million users.  They also released the information that they receive 100 billion hits per day. Among those statistics, there are also 50 billion photos and 2 trillion objects cached. However, with all of the these tremendous numbers flying around, do you know how to take advantage of this information? Here are three great ways that you can truly take control of the Facebook social media platform.

  1. Facebook Ads — While the increase of users is exponential for this social networking enterprise so is your ability to market to that consumer base.  With 500 million users, that gives you 500 million opportunities to market your product or service.  No, not everyone will be your target audience, but that is why Facebook provides the ability to narrow your audience by age, geographic location, and interests.  With 500 million users, this means that your target audience can still be very large, and could lead to a significant increase in your bottom line figures.
  2. Facebook Business Page — Consider this: the fastest growing age demographic among Facebook users is 35 and over.  According to studies, individuals in that age category are more willing to buy products or services online.  With the Facebook business page, you can maintain a unique business page that includes company photos, links, videos, events, and much more!  Along these lines, you can publish fresh/quality content within that page which can help build your online presence as well as open lines of communication with your target audience.  The key with these pages though…market and spread the word.  Invite people to “Like” your page, and make sure that you are keeping everyone involved.  Once you have them hooked, keep them hooked by staying in front of their feeds!
  3. Networking OpportuntiesBranding and marketing also includes your ability to network with your sphere of influence and let them know what you do.  They may be connected with someone that could utilize your products/services.  So, if you see a feed that you like, then click the “Like” button.  If you have an opinion about a status update, fill in your opinion and submit it.  You are getting your name out there and staying in front of your audience.  Take full advantage of the opportunities that Facebook is providing, and get out there!

The paradigm of social media marketing has shifted from why you need to market through social media venues to where and how much do I need to market through these social media platforms.  The answer is truly in the statistics that Facebook published recently.  If you have the opportunity to be in front of 500 million people at one time, and 100 billion visitors per day…take full advantage of that and market your message to the fullest extent!  If you need assistance in streamlining your social media marketing efforts please don’t hesitate to contact IMPACT.

Nothing can stop Generation Y from social networking.

That is the recent consensus in a study done by Pew Internet, and as surprising as it may seem to some, it is absolutely not a shock to the Gen X internet and social networking community.  While Generation X has developed the social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, and many others, it is Generation Y that has taken the full advantage of the services of full personal disclosure.  With that said, let’s take a look at the reasons why they will or will not continue maintaining an openness throughout adulthood for those Generation Y’ers out there:

Why They’ll Stop
  • Time Is Of The Essence — Maintaining an utterly open and honest means of communication through the vast social networking venues is extremely time consuming.  As the Gen Y folks out there grow into adulthood and professional careers, they will have less and less time to devote to their Tweets, Status updates, and other connections.
  • Written Warnings — Many companies are adopting website codes of conduct as well as internet personnel policies to enforce what has been a large amount of venting within social networking platforms.  On a daily basis, I (personally) see over 50 people spouting off that they cannot stand to go to work which, obviously, doesn’t bode well for the company.  The businesses are making an attempt to detour any of this online behavior as they try to enhance their corporate and branding image.
  • Keeping It In The Family — There is something to be said about those people out there who do not have a personal Facebook, Twitter, or other social networking profile.  They have extreme dedication to keeping their family business intimate.  I have several “Friends” on Facebook that do not have a personal page, but have built a professional page to take advantage of the traffic and popularity of that particular venue.  So, as Generation Y starts developing their own families, they could potentially take a turn down the “keep it it in the family” road.
Why They’ll Continue
  • Habits Die Hard — Gen Y will have an extremely hard time breaking their updating habits, and there will be a solid majority (according to Pew Internet) that will continue their social networking updates due to pure habitual behavior.  This is apparent in the new phones that are out which specifically connect to social networking platforms to enable a little more of that habit-forming behavior.
  • Get Connected and Stay Connected — Everyone innately wants to know what everyone is doing; it’s the minute piece of voyeur behavior that we don’t like to admit we have.  We love to share what we are doing because we know that we love to see what everyone else is doing (so why not help the never-ending cycle).  The ability to see and compare what some of your friends are doing is one of the biggest draws to maintaining a social network.
  • The Circle of Life — Gen Y folks will want to stay connected to the “now” social networks because that will be what their kids use to share their lives.  As karma typically goes, look for a repeat of their behavior from their children (though it will be modified with their technology), and keep an eye out for their Gen Y parents to maintain a social networking account to monitor their kids (and share what they are doing as well).

The bottom line here is that social networking is here to stay, and everyone needs to take advantage of the current places that are frequented by Generation Y individuals.  Create those web 2.0 Facebook pages, figure out a way to strengthen your Twitter account, utilize great search engine optimization strategies, and remember that the current Gen Y kids are going to be your future marketing managers!

wordpress 300x300 Wordpress 3.0: Living Up To The HypeFor web designers and bloggers (like myself), the release of WordPress 3.0 has been one of the more anticipated platform upgrades since the original creation of WordPress.  The beast of the blogging platforms has a plethora of priceless features packed into the 3.0 release.  Here is a sneak peak at the top 5 features included in WordPress 3.0:

  1. Custom Backgrounds — The ability to easily add a custom background to your website is one of the biggest features added to WordPress 3.0.  With just a few clicks and/or uploads you afforded the opportunity to uniquely customize the look and feel of your website.
  2. Custom Headers — Finally, the opportunity to easily add unique headers to your favorite templates and themes.  This new version of WordPress allows you to control the header you utilize through an easy-to-access selection in your admin panel.
  3. Custom Nav Menus — In the previous versions of WordPress, you either had to download navigation plugins or edit code in order to get a customized navigation menu.  However, in this release there is an easy-to-use section in your admin panel that uses a drag and drop method for you to organize a custom navigation menu (and create many menu as well).
  4. Author Specific Template — This is one of the coolest features out there; especially for a website or blog that has multiple contributors/authors.  In WordPress 3.0, you are now able to create various templates for various authors which is a significant advantage if you have two different style of writers or multiple writers that need a different template for their posts.
  5. Merger of WordPress and WordPress Multi-User (Mu) — This is the be all-end all feature of WordPress 3.0; the merging of WPMU and WordPress.  Website owners are now able to provide/run multiple WordPress sites from one single installation.

Overall, there are a ton of features for the new WordPress 3.0 that will significantly make your life easier as a website owner.  However, there is still a lot of coding involved to make sure that everything works appropriately.  With that said, please make sure you contact your web developer to discuss what features you would like implemented with the new version of WordPress 3.0.

The power of Twitter is being demonstrated by Lebron James, the NBA superstar who started a page this week and has already accumulated over 220,000 followers. ESPN announced King James will appear live tonight at 9 to spill the beans on his choice of teams for the upcoming season, but there are reports that the news may be posted on Twitter first, which would be perhaps Twitter’s biggest post ever, because the whole world is waiting for Lebron’s news.

Lebron JamesYou can add Lebron to your Twitter account by going to twitter.com/kingjames or @kingjames. Currently, there are only two posts, the first to announce he’s “on board,” the second to report that “I just got up so I can head down to my B-ball Camp.”

C’mon Lebron, you can do better than that. The world would like to know where you’ll play this year and get details on how you made your decision. We also want to know how the decision will impact other free agents, many of whom are waiting until you make your announcement to set their own plans in motion.

What can marketers learn from Lebron’s Twitter experience? One thing is to use your Twitter page to report your company’s big news as it happens so everyone will know what you’re up to. Lebron actually apologized for not being on Twitter initially, which demonstrates its importance in the social marketing arena.

If you don’t have a Twitter page, check with your web marketing agency to get it started and once it’s up post regularly (and feel free to visit Lebron’s page for details on his plans).

Google has become one of the largest enterprises throughout the world wide web.  From Google Analytics to Google Adwords, and Reader to Calendar, you can find just about anything you need within the Google world.  However, behind all of these great programs there are many more great features, and one of the best feature-rich programs is Google Maps.  Here is a quick list of the most pertinent and useful mashable features that Google Maps has to offer:

  1. Map Builder – This feature allows you to tag various locations on a map and publish it on your site.  With this feature, you can either work with Google Maps or work separately from the Google enterprise.  For what it’s worth, I think that Google Maps provides quite a bit of useful information so that you don’t have to start from scratch creating a map.
  2. MapMyPage — This is, by far, the easiest way to include Google Maps on your contact page within your website.  All you have to do is copy and paste one line of code into your page and presto chango you have your very own Google Map on your site.
  3. Map My Life — I, personally, like this feature if you own a business that either has multiple branches, or does business throughout the nation or world.  This shows a map of where you have been in a given period of time as well as provides a detailed xml map of the visits in that certain time period.
  4. Geo Twitter — Like the app name states, this allows you to position yourself within your tweets so that your clientele know where you are tweeting from.  There is, however, an exact replica of this application that Twitter uses.  So, this is more or less your personal preference whether to use Twitter’s version or this.
  5. PdMarker — This is one of my favorite apps to add to the Google Maps program primarily because it affords you the opportunity to customize the marker of the maps.  You can change it into your logo, a “You are here” button, or anything else you so choose.

google maps 253x300 Road Map To Success Using Google MapsAs you can see, there are many more functions of Google Maps other than just a search and find directions engine.  The program truly allows you to customize and broadcast unique individual maps that are tailored to help your audience find you more easily.  If you have questions about how you can customize Google Maps to truly work for your site and your clientele feel free to leave a comment here or contact Impact.

The idea is to utilize viral marketing along with the other marketing strategies to promote your website. It mixes well with everything from keyword articles and videos to building lists.
